Trine

A good action / puzzle platformer. The mechanics, abilities, character customization with trinkets found in levels is solid, well executed and good gameplay.

Overall it is a great game mechanically, but I found myself not that engaged or motivated to play it. I would imagine it is more hectic and engaging while playing local co-op, but I was playing singleplayer. Story is ok, but perhaps it was the linear level design that is constantly pushing the player in one direction.

With other side scrolling platforming games with large open worlds, like Aquaria and 1000 Amps, there is a sense of exploration and amusement at discovering new things and secrets. In level based platformers like this one, it's more of a get to the end level (Repeat until game is done). Yes there is exploration throughout the level, but it just doesn't engage in the same way.

TL;DR : Good platformer, better with friends - beat levels, collect things.

Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale

It's an RPG that stresses earning money and shop mechanics more than exploring it's world and characters. You are supposed to earn enough money to pay off increasingly larger amounts of debt, but this only encourages grinding at your store.

You can leave the store with a hero character and explore a dungeon to gather treasure. This mode plays like an Zelda on the SNES, top down action combat, but unlike Zelda is straight up combat with only three special abilities per character. When your doing nothing but it for 5-10 dungeon floors against the same old slimes, pumpkins, bats, and what the fuck ever it gets boring and tedious fast. Also with a limited space of what you can take back to sell I found I had to be constantly managing my inventory, but that crap is with all RPGs.

There is also a crafting system for more valuable items, which means more dungeon grinding for ingredients. But under the fixed time constraint to earn money, it's very possible to ignore.

Only the first 10%-20% of content is introduced by the game, the rest you have to dick around to find/ start the unlocking events. Upon finishing paying off the debt, I had only unlocked 2 dungeons and 2 heroes, out of like 8 dungeons and 9 heroes. According to the wiki and realizing the amount of grinding to unlock it all I realized my patience with the game had worn out.

TL;DR : Beat the game by grinding only the first 20% of content? Lots of playtime promised though.

Bully: Scholarship Edition

A nice action sandbox game, although in my inexperience with the genre I don't have anything else to compare it to.

Fair warning is that it is a poor PC port, no windowed mode or advanced graphics settings, mouse has some sort of analog dead zone which exaggerates large movements and totally ignores small ones, mini games designed for analog sticks but using the mouse can be frustrating to get used to.

There is quite a lot to do between missions, collectibles, and mini games. I was able to get 97% completion within 50 hours so it's a fairly long experience, probably longer if you feel like messing around in it instead of going straight from one objective to the next.

Combat is clunky, only hit and grapple, and most bosses are invulnerable to grapple. So it's button mashing hit most of the time. You do get combat upgrades that are just holding down hit after x amounts of button mashing it, but it's all largely irrelevant.

For me it was enjoyable up until end game, then all that was left was reoccurring boring mini games, and directionless mischief in the sandbox. There isn't anything branching story so there is also no reason to replay it as well.

TL;DR: Do you like sandbox games? Can you stand poor PC ports?

Adventures in caves with a band of unlikeable stereotypes. As soon as the titular character opens his smug mouth, you can't help but think: "what a douche bag." Lots of rocks, painfully slow walking speeds, with sprinklings of bible puzzles in between.

Yeah, it's a Christian game with a bunch of biblical references everywhere. To it's defense it does have really well done environments.

A plus: pretty rocks and sand. Cons: everything else, but thankfully any suffering playing this game will be short.

TL;DR : Pretty environment art religion game. Avoid.

A dota style game, with focus on unit control and "strategy". It has the neat gimmick , but core gameplay has some problems. Your hero unit doesn't have a wide variety of skills, so must instead focus on building a preselected array of units to place and command on the battlefield. Except that both your mouse and keyboard are both mapped to your hero, so you can only select one unit at a time and give orders one at a time, and you have no control of where they go to attack ( closest enemy base only). So each game plays out as a frantic scramble capturing bases until one side amasses enough units to swarm the home base. This is a poor excuse for strategy as you can't order flanks, have to position each unit by hand, taking your hero out of the fight, and come into the game with a preset unit loadout that may already be disadvantaged against your opponent.

It is well polished and technically excellent, but core gameplay imo is frustrating and tedious.

TL;DR : Avoid.

An action platformer with the gravity gun and control over gravity. The gameplay is fun, and straightforward with collecting new upgrades to expand your options. The story isn't anything special, just some poor motivations to go from one level to the next, so it's pretty ignorable. The game is actually pretty short, as 3-4 hours is definitely enough to beat it as long as your not going for every collectable doodad, and even then it doesn't anything else going for it to make you want to play it again.

Overall it's a well polished game, entertaining for a few hours, and a great example for Unity developers to see a finished commercial game made with the engine.

TL;DR : 2D Gravity gun, worth a play. Short and not worth replay though.

A decent, fun F2P FPS that had just enough new tricks in the bag to make it different than other experiences. Yes there are unlockable customization items (guns, armor, tools, and killstreak items) that to own permanently you have to grind to afford, I don't mind as it's something to look forward to buying what I want. There are cheaper rentals too that'll remain competitive with personally customized guns.

The game is pretty fast paced, so twitch reflexes and good use of tactics are key. Overall it is a standard PVP FPS really, just with neat modifications like cloaking, revives, temporary wall hack ability, mech piloting, deployable turrets and mines all put together with a good variety of game types. Though the amount of maps available for certain modes, 1 each for two types of game modes, leaves something to be desired.

This doesn't really stand out as something amazing, but it's not bad either. If you like the genre, it's good and has future content to come.

TL;DR : Futuristic customization heavy Call of Duty with wall hacks. Try it out?

An alright game, made much better by coop. Stick around the same levels as the people your playing coop with, otherwise the boring, unimmersive numbers and stats behind the game start to show. It's fun while its a challenge to scramble to find a better gun, and the enemies are tough enough that they require teamwork to beat. Modding makes the majority of it too easy, and like going through the motions, so try not to play with the ridiculously higher leveled players with the obviously modded guns. The core game is good, but the DLCs are actually much more memorable, and better experiences. Dialogue is nice and memorable, or maybe that's just Scooter; "This is where the cars live! Get you one!"

If you like FPSs, and / or RPGs then you'll like this. I'd say leveling and the progressively better gear / artificially stronger enemies in a FPS never really feels right, but this is what it has, and while it's not great for it - it still manages to be a pretty fun experience.

TL;DR : Grindfest Numbers Game now as FPS! Fun while numbers game remains invisible.

This has a neat visual style and nice ambiance, but every time I play this I can't not think 'pretentious art-game bullshit'. The eagerness of it wanting to tweet everything you do doesn't help either.

It tries to be extremely simplistic by controlling everything with the mouse, but this leads to frustrations when it asks you to do more complex tasks than moving around. "Wait so I click hold here, okay now something is glowing, and then click hold over here, and why is it not doing anything.... "

Oh and it returns to menu after every "30 minute" chapter, to encourage players to take a break. I don't mind this feature as I've usually had more than I would care for with the game by then.

TL;DR :  Well it is an experience unlike any other game so far. <Would you like to Tweet this?>

Blocks That Matter

A challenging puzzle game, that occasionally dips into being an action platformer. Not being much of a puzzle gamer enthusiast I don't really find overworking my brain to find the most efficient solutions of placing blocks in space and time that much fun. But it will make you think, exercising critical thinking while given new and odd rules to work with to earn your victories. It's got a lot of references to other games, so there is some neat trivia throughout.

Not my cup of tea, but still excellent at what it does. If you want a challenging game that isn't about reflexes, twitch reactions, grinding for better numbers, or memorization, this will certainly fulfill.

TL;DR Good puzzle game. I'm not a super fan of puzzle games though.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2

A bit late, but this overall an excellent shooter. What's extremely memorable is the quality of the sound effects is amazing, still being far better than new FPS games. The destruction system is also refreshing and really helps change the game as it progresses, allowing for a wider variety of tactics that are extremely satisfying to pull off.

The singleplayer is forgetable, but the real soul of this game is in the multiplayer, playing conquest or rush. Of course by now BF3 is doing the same things bigger, and better than this, but this game does keep it's own unique feeling with characters speaking lines that have noticably more personality.

Like all battlefield games, good teamwork will allow you to win against individual good players. Having a mic and coordinating will allow you to be extremely effective in a vehicle.

As an FPS it's a must play, even if just to witness the aspects that this game got very right!

TL;DR : Must play! Eargasm!

Stacking

Originally posted : August 9th, 2012 @ 3:53am

It's ok, the stacking mechanic is unique and interesting, but that's about all it's got going for it. Story is rather meh, told though vignettes made to look like old films, and largely uninteresting. The special effects that are on by default, vignette and DOF were really annoying and made it harder to see the world so had to turn those off. Worlds aren't too stunning or complex, each being a new form of transportation (train, boat, airship) with a tiny list of objectives.

If your not a 100% completionist you'd probably burn through this game in an hour or two. Even if you are it just feels like work. The game asks you to do increasingly arbitrary and meaningless gags with the various dolls whose abilities have no use in gameplay and are merely there just to make the world seem not as bland and boring as it is.

Costume Quest and Psychonauts are much better experiences, so if your new to Double Fine games, those are much better games to start.

TL;DR : Not satisfying, rather boring.

Blowing up zombies (purple dots) with artillery, orbital bombardment, mines, dynamite, snipers, and infantry! A top down strategy / action / puzzle / management game about trying to save hapless citizens from hordes of zombies with different units and resources. It is very friendly to mods so difficulty and user experience will vary, as you can set up games to be way to easy, or exceedingly hard. The story is told randomly through disconnected vignettes that are unlocked through play, and really do not affect the game.

Overall it is fun, but can be kind of grindy at times, and through mods experience may vary.

TL;DR : Worth a shot, neat time waster. + Points for awesome tunes.

Bastion

A great action oriented dungeon crawler! Combat difficulty can be adjusted by the user, and overall combat controls are very nice. You get a bunch of unlockables, a good selection of unique feeling weapons, and upgrades to customize to your play style. Challenges are actually challenging without being despairingly difficult. The story telling isn't cinematic, but is unique and well done in it's own right. To top it off is a great soundtrack and it all makes one must play game!

As for replayability it comes with a New Game + and Score Attack, and you can ramp up the difficulty making for some tough challenges on old levels. IMO you want to ramp up the difficulty as you upgrade your gear as it keeps the game challenging and satisfying.

TL;DR : Must play!

I wasn't expecting much when I started this, but as I was playing it turned out to be better than good. I'd say it's like VVVVVV but way more enjoyable. Both are open world exploration, but in this you can clear a rooms that makes it easier to traverse and get power ups that also help. The only flaw I found is that because it is running on flash, I get some slowdowns when pressing a lot of controls, and for no reason at all at times. Despite that I would still definitely recommend this to everyone.

[Updated game now runs on C++ and is buttery smooth, no more flash problems]

A neat adventure game that has a bit of everything mixed in, there is some shooting, driving, stealth, flying, collecting, racing and high speed chases. It is an open world to explore, but it is disappointingly small. As it tries to do so much there are other games that do things much better because of a smaller focus. There are some issues with the camera being less than bearable at points but overall it's a neat experience. It's kinda in the same genre as games like mario 64, and psychonauts, so give it a go if you enjoyed those. There is an entirely optional air hockey mini game that is incredibly frustrating though.

TL;DR : Sucker for N64 Era style platformers?  Y- You'll enjoy this.  N- Try Psychonauts it's better.

It's a very well done bullet hell, shoot em up game. Easy to pick up, hard to master. There is a vaunt mechanic that provides a temporary relief, and different ships with different abilities so there is a degree of strategy as well while playing. It also has a local multiplayer and can use either the mouse or keyboard so you can easily get 4 people playing on the same computer. It is challenging and really fun to play with friends so it's definitely worth it. The DLC adds new ships, but my fav is one that comes standard. I haven't tried the hardest difficuly, but I hear that it ramps up the difficulty considerably, so there will always be something to draw your attention.

TL;DR : Good stuff, gets very challenging, and fun to play local multiplayer!

Aquaria

Originally posted : March 26th, 2012 @ 12:01am

A great game, it presents a large world with different zones and powers to collect. The core mechanics are unique for a side scrolling adventure game and it's underwater setting mostly removes the annoyances of jumping sections ( except when not underwater ) . It's a large world to explore and lots of things to collect. Some backtracking and the size of the world does make you wish for more warp points and faster travel, but everything is up to the player if they want to do it. Anyways it's a neat adventure, but probably not worth more than one playthrough. The one time you do play it though, is worth it.

TL;DR : Worth a play!

It's not really special, ok you get a lightsaber, but charging in to a group of enemies will make you mincemeat. Makes a convenient flashlight, but better to shoot things. * I never realized how slow a laser goes, this suprised me - when it's supposed to be a beam of concentrated light. Oh well movie logic and other crap. Nostalgia goggles make it passable I guess. Have fun searching an empty level for switches that blend into the wall textures. There are better FPSs and there are better Star Wars games ( I think - so far not quite sure) so yea its rather meh.

Battlefield 2: Complete Collection

So, uh how could anyone enjoy or even like this game? At it's core, the shooting mechanics are terrible, which basically ruins a decent gameplay system. For instance using an M16, standing and aiming down irons and one 3-round burst at a 10 yard target the grouping is almost 1 meter across. A LMG is worthless unless prone, so you get people jumping, proning and killing you, even after getting the drop on them from behind and having 2-3 seconds to put some good rounds on target. Everything feels completely ineffectual because the game forces misses on you so fucking much. Might as well be throwing rocks most of the time, and other players do, all their grenades, everywhere! Oh and maps with jets? Enjoy constant deaths with no way of fighting back, - stationary AA is a joke, - and no MANPADS for any fighting chance or deterrence. BF:BC2 > BF2, even being feature gimped. Core gun play is just better.
tl;dr "I'm shooting like a handicapped child!" All the time everytime. Jets = OP.

TL;DR : If you've never played then don't bother.

Puzzle Agent 2

Originally posted : December 31st, 2011 @ 10:45pm

My memory may be fuzzy but, number 1 seemed longer, more engaging and satisfying overall. This doesn't have the same eerie vibe exploring the town and finding out more about the story, more like a short wrap up to all the unanswered questions left in the original.

Even the puzzles in the original seemed better as they didn't go out of the game context to reference outside information that the game expects you to know. (Hint: Binary number system, and PI's digits. Great if you know them, but frustrating when it doesn't give you any context for number sequence puzzles.

The original Puzzle Agent I still recommend playing as a good example of a story driven adventure/puzzle game that manages to convey fear and suspense. But this with its explanations for the mysterious kills the magic that made the first one a gem.

TL;DR : Not as good as first, skip.

Costume Quest

Originally posted : December 27th, 2011 @ 1:28pm

A nice experience, but the main story is very short, like about 6 hours on average. It does not have a complex item or battle system rpg (quick time events for critical hits and defending) so its real easy to dive in and not get confused, but still remains challenging and involving. My main annoyances is the fixed camera, which makes it annoying because you'll sometimes find a large prop hiding your character on screen, and there are only 3 map areas.

TL;DR : An RPG Lite. Short, but fun though.

Dungeons of Dredmor

Originally posted : December 21st, 2011 @ 12:48pm

This is game that'll eat a lot of time, at very little cost. Yes it is a large numbers game, where you'll want to have higher numbers than the enemies your facing - but it also depends on the skills that you build your character with as well. Selecting from a large base, it's fun to let it randomly pick your build then try to make it work. Being turn based doesn't mean that it's any less frantic or too easy as you can easily find yourself outnumbered, cornered and killed. The dungeons being randomly generated can be somewhat unoriginal after awhile and random loot makes the complex crafting system useful only after acquiring a bunch of random crap.

Overall it is a neat game, great value for it's price and quite a lot of replayability - well from dying a lot.

TL;DR : It eats so much time, are you really that bored with nothing else to do?

Psychonauts

Originally posted : December 21st, 2011 @ 12:38pm

Maybe I might be nostalgia tripping, but Psychonauts takes everything good from great games like Banjo-Kazooie and Super Mario 64 and does it much better.
It is a very well fleshed out game, if you can get with the very unique artstyle. At any rate it is a much better story telling game, than the aforementioned - going into darker jokes and providing better context for levels with actual plot motivations. It is a great game of it's class, definitely worth trying out.
My only gripes, was having to adjust the controls for mouse and keyboard, and that the collectables are flat-alpha-ed planes that are very easy to miss when looking at them from the wrong angles.

TL;DR : N64 Era Platformer Nostalgia Goodness, Must play!

Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Day of Defeat: Source

Originally posted : June 6th, 2011 @ 11:41pm

Of all the competitive muliplayer games Valve has released on Source this one is my personal favorite.

Like TF2 it's a class based team shooter with territory control based objectives. But with a more satisfying core shooting mechanics, eg not having to shoot an enemy 6 times point blank to the head, and without no long periods of waiting ala CS:S.

Classes are effective based on location and situation they are in, making using the environment and controlling the situation keys to success. Teamplay is encouraged for accomplishing objectives and maintaing frontlines, not shoved down your throat ala TF2 where the wildly large differences in classes specialties means you cannot handle certain situations as your current class.

The core maps are fun, but where this game really shines is in the large selection of custom maps that keep the experience fresh and challenging. To my experience the commnity that play this game are usually friendly, laid back, and great fun. - Except realism.

TL;DR : A personal favorite, class based shooter that is more realistic than TF2.

Star Wars: Dark Forces

Originally posted : June 6th, 2011 @ 10:45pm

An old FPS game about Star Wars, like Doom.

The worst threat you'll find in this is a generic enemy on a different elevation than you. The mouse does not control looking up or down so you have to scramble across the keyboard just to clumsily aim while getting shot up. That and the large and bland environments filled with sparse texture variation while you run past them at high speed can lead to disorientation and confusion on where you are and what the hell your supposed to be doing.

TL;DR : Yeah, it's not really fun to play.

Do you have a solid understanding of Orbital Mechanics?

Yes, well finally that university education pays off!

No, well prepare a wig or something, the amount of hair you pull off your head in frustration will probably look very awkward tomorrow.

In it's defense all the other levels in where it's a risk vs reward version of the fish eating game, is satisfying when your the biggest bloated orb thing bouncing around in your now empty pond.

TL;DR : Casual, fun, until sudden insane difficulty spike.

Torchlight

Torchlight is _______(randomly generated word here) that tries to ________ extend it's total gameplay time by __________ .

My experience with it was lots of grinding, spamming the same one useful special ability over and over. Because of it's randomization of equipment, and linear RPG nature the game gets less fun and more tedious the higher level you get. Your super awesome equipment? Yeah, it's pretty much worthless when even against a common spider when your at a high level. The enemies stats all scale up, but yours rely on whatever crap you can find, so each encounter takes longer and longer just to kill simple enemies.

If you expect story from this RPG you get what, like 10 paragraphs of dialogue throughout the main plot line. It starts of with a little intro whenever your about to enter a new series of levels that use a diffent palette.

It's not challenging from either an action, adventure or strategy perspective, it's just large amount of grinding away.

TL;DR : Avoid.  Grindfest and Numbers game.

Then you slowly work through all the neat puzzles that all introduce a new element into the mix to keep things challenging, and your proud of yourself for finally conquering the game.

"Congratulations, you're thinking with portals!"

NO. Your not.

Your not thinking with portals until you attempt the challenges it throws at you, (speed, portals used, and steps taken)

No other gaming experience I've hard is close to the hectic experience of flying from portal to portal, shooting through space, totally disoriented and praying that you don't mess up a shot.

Well it's a "Strategy" game about turret arrangement. But after finding one arrangement that works, every level becomes a process of duplicating it and waiting for the waves to finish. About the only time the arrangements ever had to be changed where in the minigames and endless survival mode. Which are only unlocked after the 40+ levels of the story mode.

I found it to be a chore just getting to the end after awhile. Oh and it's also comes with in game upgrades that you have to buy and earning dosh in this game is really slow. That and the zen garden are just built to waste a bunch of hours in a chore like manner to be able to get everything in the game.

I can see myself enjoying it for a lot more time, as at 60 hours in hard mode kicks my ass and I haven't even tried the 2 difficulties above it.

An adventure that would've best been enjoyed without knowing the major plot twists beforehand. The city of Rapture sounds unique, but given the ability to backtrack to any previously visited level there is little motivation to explore it's world. Everything is out to get you, and when you go back, they're still dead.

In terms of gameplay, once you get the telekinesis plasmid, everything else is junk. Think HL2's gravity gun in a world littered with props - and bodies, everywhere.

TL;DR : Like Metro 2033, it's fun and worth a playthrough, but that's about it.

Maybe I'm a sucker for the supernatural, but I find those red gnomes really creepy. This game does a wonderful job of building atmosphere and mystery that the second game just throws out the window with lame explanations.

Introduction

I've done some small reviews for games that I've finished on Steam.
Since I apparently like talking a lot about them it makes more sense for them to be public and accessible to everyone.  Here I can go into more depth, and hopefully encourages discussion more than on Steam. These are just personal opinions and biases along with my own experiences while playing the game. I'll try to end with a one line recommendation summary.

To start with I'll regurgitate all of my old reviews and add new ones per game as I play them.

Anyways I hope you find these helpful!
